In this video, Holly shares her emotional breastfeeding journey. It has taken her a long time to talk about this as it was a difficult time for us all… but we really hope by being open and honest about our experiences, it will help someone else who may be experiencing something similar.
Everybody’s feeding journey is different and unique, whether you are breast or bottle feeding it doesn’t matter… but when you want to breast feed and it doesn’t work out, the results can be devastating.
Holly had surgery on her right breast when she was younger and was told she wouldn’t be able to breastfeed, but still tried her best with her one “working” boob.
She had good and bad days along the way, but after a series of difficulties (breast surgery, inverted nipples, vasospasm )… her mental health was beginning to suffer, as was Atlas’ weight.
We tried a range of products to help with milk flow and latching issues, including nipple shields, breast pumps and lactation supplements… however with the odds against us, we experimented with combination feeding.
Combination feeding allowed us some breathing room to continue trying and thankfully allowed us to continue breastfeeding Atlas daily until he started eating solid food.
I am so proud of Holly for her commitment to offer Atlas the best start in life, but even more so when she realised that there is more to being a mother than milk.
I am truly thankful that we discovered combination feeding and if you are struggling I would strongly advise that you consider it as an option. Parenting is not black and white, you don’t have to be just bottle or just breast – Often in order to get out of the darkness, you need to find the grey.
Remember that each journey is individual, don’t be too hard on yourself. Please seek out help if you are struggling – both physical guidance, as well as emotional support are important during the process.
